Specialized’s New $550 S-Works Recon EVO Mashes Up Ares 2 Fit & Recon Dirt

Specialized has introduced the S-Works Recon EVO, a premium off-road cycling shoe that adapts the successful technology and fit of the Ares 2 road shoe for dirt riding. Positioned as the flagship in Specialized’s off-road footwear range, the Recon EVO offers a locked-in fit with enhanced foot retention and a slightly roomier toe box compared to the original S-Works Recon. While the Recon remains available, the new EVO model targets riders seeking a more precise fit and comfort for cross-country, marathon, and gravel racing disciplines. The Recon EVO incorporates the innovative PowerHug closure system, which wraps around the midfoot and heel to minimise foot movement and maximise power transfer. A significant update lies in the use of Specialized’s Body Geometry Natural last, previously seen on the Ares 2 and Remco shoes, which reshapes the toe box to reduce pressure on the forefoot by 44 percent while maintaining anatomical alignment. This last also features adaptive fit zones designed to soften pressure across the upper, enhancing comfort during long or rough off-road rides. In terms of construction, the shoe retains the carbon-fibre sole with adjustable TPU pontoons for improved pedal stability and traction, alongside rubber toe knobs and heel lugs for protection on varied terrain. The Dual-Dial BOA Li2 closure system ensures fine-tuned adjustability. Specialized’s commitment to performance is underscored by the involvement of elite riders such as Matt Beers, Victor Koretzky, and Haley Batten, who have contributed feedback and demonstrated the shoe’s capabilities in high-profile events like the Cape Epic.
