ARIDGE Land Aircraft Carrier: Modular Electrification Takes Flight
Summary By: eMotoX
XPENG’s ARIDGE division has unveiled a groundbreaking modular flying car system, dubbed the “Land Aircraft Carrier,” which aims to bring personal electric flight into everyday use. The innovative concept combines a highly advanced electric ground vehicle with a compact electric aircraft that can be deployed and folded automatically. Trial production has already begun, with consumer deliveries scheduled for later this year; the 2026 production run is reportedly sold out, prompting plans to expand capacity based on demand. This initiative forms part of China’s broader push to develop a low-altitude economy through electrified, highly automated flight.
The system’s two distinct modules are manufactured in separate facilities reflecting their differing technical demands. The ground vehicle benefits from XPENG’s automated automotive plant, featuring three electric motors with steering on all axles, active suspension, and a range exceeding 1,000 kilometres. It can operate without a special driving licence and includes self-driving capabilities, making it a sophisticated electric vehicle in its own right. The aircraft module, by contrast, is produced in a more manual but technologically advanced aerospace facility, utilising lightweight carbon fibre and forged aluminium in its construction, with rigorous testing akin to Formula 1 car production.
ARIDGE’s flying car aims to simplify personal aviation by reducing the complexity and cost traditionally associated with helicopters. The aircraft uses a single-stick control system and automated flight functions, including takeoff, cruising, and landing, which significantly lower the pilot training and certification barriers. Powered by two 25 kWh CALB batteries in an 800V system, the aircraft offers about 30 minutes of flight time with multiple redundancies built into its six-propeller design and flight systems to enhance safety. The electric propulsion also results in quieter operation and reduced emissions compared to conventional helicopters.
The pricing of approximately 2 million RMB (around US$300,000) places the Land Aircraft Carrier in a competitive position relative to luxury vehicles such as the AMG G63 or Range Rover SV, while offering a combination of ground and aerial mobility. This dual capability could appeal to affluent buyers seeking innovative transport solutions to bypass urban congestion or reach remote locations more efficiently. By integrating electric driving and flying, ARIDGE is positioning itself at the forefront of future mobility, potentially transforming how people commute and travel in densely populated areas.
