Workhorse sells 100 electric trucks to Gateway Fleets
Summary By: eMotoX
Workhorse, a North American manufacturer specialising in electric commercial vehicles, has secured an order for 100 W56 electric step vans from Gateway Fleets, a California-based company providing integrated electric vehicle and charging solutions for delivery operators. The delivery of these vehicles will be managed by Kingsburg Truck Center, a local truck dealer in California. Gateway Fleets offers a comprehensive package to fleet operators, combining purpose-built electric trucks with on-site charging infrastructure, fleet management support, and flexible leasing options designed to reduce upfront costs.
The W56 step van supplied by Workhorse features a standard wheelbase of 178 inches and is equipped with a 210 kWh battery pack, delivering an estimated range of around 150 miles per charge. The vehicle offers substantial cargo capacity, with 1,000 cubic feet of space and a payload capability of up to 10,000 pounds. All W56 models are manufactured at Workhorse’s facility in Union City, Indiana, which has the capacity to produce up to 5,000 vehicles annually on a single shift, highlighting the company’s production capabilities to meet growing demand.
Scott Griffith, CEO of Workhorse, emphasised the strength of Gateway Fleets’ bundled business model, which addresses the challenges faced by fleet operators transitioning to electric vehicles. He noted that Gateway’s approach simplifies the electrification process by managing all aspects from vehicle provision to charging infrastructure. Jamie Miller, Chief Revenue Officer at Gateway Fleets, highlighted real-world benefits from their operations, citing fuel cost savings of up to 65 per cent on delivery routes in Southern California, and praised the reliability of the W56 vans in last-mile delivery scenarios.
This partnership underscores the increasing adoption of electric commercial vehicles in the logistics sector, driven by operational cost savings and environmental considerations. Gateway Fleets is expanding its network beyond Southern California, signalling a broader regional push towards electrification of delivery fleets. The collaboration between Workhorse, Gateway Fleets, and Kingsburg Truck Center represents a model for delivering turnkey electric vehicle solutions that could accelerate the transition to zero-emission commercial transport in the US market.
