Look Out Tesla, There’s A New Robotaxi In Town

Summary By: eMotoX
Lucid Motors has entered the competitive robotaxi market through a strategic partnership with Uber and autonomous vehicle specialist Nuro, supported by Hertz’s new fleet management affiliate, Oro Mobility. This collaboration aims to challenge Tesla’s dominance in the luxury electric vehicle (EV) and autonomous ride-hailing sectors. Lucid’s robotaxi initiative leverages the company’s luxury EV expertise combined with Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous driving technology and Uber’s extensive global ride-hailing platform, signalling a significant push into autonomous mobility. Despite being a younger and smaller player than Tesla, Lucid has demonstrated resilience and growth in the US EV market, notably increasing sales of its Gravity SUV and Air sedan even after federal EV tax credits were reduced. The partnership with Uber, first revealed last year, has already seen Lucid deliver vehicles for autonomous testing in cities like Las Vegas and San Francisco, with plans to expand the robotaxi service across the US and internationally. Lucid is ramping up production at its Arizona factory to meet anticipated demand, underscoring its commitment to scaling this new venture. The new Lucid robotaxi boasts advanced features designed to enhance passenger experience and safety, including a sophisticated sensor suite with lidar, radar, and high-resolution cameras for 360-degree perception. The vehicle also incorporates interactive in-ride screens, real-time visualisation of the vehicle’s surroundings, and a spacious interior that comfortably accommodates six passengers plus luggage. Powered by NVIDIA’s DRIVE AGX Thor platform, the robotaxi integrates cutting-edge AI processing to support its autonomous capabilities, blending Lucid’s reputation for luxury with practical design for shared mobility. Uber has committed to acquiring at least 35,000 Lucid vehicles exclusively for its upcoming robotaxi service, alongside a substantial $200 million investment in Lucid, bringing its total stake to $500 million. Additionally, Lucid secured a $550 million investment from the Saudi Public Investment Fund affiliate Ayar Third Investment, highlighting strong financial backing for its autonomous ambitions. Meanwhile, Hertz’s Oro Mobility will manage fleet operations and maintenance, facilitating both autonomous and driver-led services in key US markets such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and soon North Jersey. The robotaxi service is set to launch in the San Francisco Bay Area later this year, with other locations under consideration for 2027. This collaboration marks a significant development in the evolving autonomous mobility landscape, positioning Lucid, Uber, Nuro, and Hertz as formidable competitors to Tesla’s much-anticipated but yet-to-be-realised robotaxi plans. As the market accelerates, Tesla will need to intensify its efforts to maintain its leadership in the luxury EV and autonomous ride-hailing sectors.
