Interview: Chris Mills discusses the Kove – “The first impressions were actually very impressive”

Kove Factory Racing is an emerging contender in the motocross scene, targeting entry into the EMX250 class by 2027 with ambitions to eventually compete at the Grand Prix level. Central to this new venture is Chris Mills, brought on as a test rider to help develop the bike from its infancy. The project, still in its early stages, benefits from the expertise of seasoned professionals like Tom Steensels, who plays a key role behind the scenes. Mills describes the experience as a rare opportunity to influence the bike’s evolution closely, working alongside a small, tightly-knit team based in Belgium. Mills’ initial ride on the Kove machine left a positive impression, with particular praise for the chassis and steering, which he found exceptional and responsive. The bike’s power delivery was described as smooth and manageable, suggesting a solid foundation to build upon as the team continues development. Although the bike has a unique feel—especially around the tank and cornering ability—it is not yet a fully race-ready EMX250 machine, with engine performance still to be optimised. Mills emphasised the gradual, step-by-step approach to refining the bike, confident in the team’s capability to enhance both power and reliability. The introduction of another manufacturer into motocross is widely welcomed by Mills, who sees it as a vital boost to the sport’s competitiveness and diversity. He highlighted the challenges faced by non-factory teams and expressed hope that Kove’s factory-backed effort will grow steadily, providing more opportunities for riders and teams alike. Despite the inevitable scepticism that accompanies new entrants, Mills remains pragmatic and even encourages doubters to maintain their reservations while the team proves itself on track. Mills enjoys a collaborative working relationship with Steensels and appreciates the freedom to provide honest feedback, which is crucial for the bike’s development. The project’s focus remains firmly on testing and refining components away from race pressures, with no immediate plans for competitive outings this year. Instead, the team aims to perfect performance and durability through practice sessions before considering race participation. While Mills himself will concentrate on testing and his commitments in other championships, there is potential for other riders to represent Kove in races later in the season.
