Motoring groups reports five-fold surge in EV interest – led by BYD, MH and Chery
Summary By: eMotoX
Interest in electric vehicles (EVs) has surged dramatically in Australia, with the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) reporting a more than five-fold increase in EV-related searches on its Car Match service during March. This spike, amounting to a 461 per cent rise compared to February, coincided with geopolitical tensions that disrupted oil supply routes and caused global fuel prices to soar. Leading the surge in consumer attention are brands such as BYD, MG, and Chery, reflecting a growing appetite for more affordable and sustainable transport options amid rising fuel costs.
The RACV’s Car Match platform, which helps users compare vehicles based on running costs, features, and financing options, has become a key tool for prospective EV buyers navigating a rapidly evolving market. Notably, EV prices in Australia have started to fall, with models like the BYD Atto 1 Essential now available from under $24,000 before on-road costs. However, RACV’s head of policy, James Williams, urges buyers to carefully consider their personal needs and lifestyle before committing to an EV purchase, emphasising factors such as daily commute distances, driving habits, and the availability of charging infrastructure.
Williams also highlighted important considerations for potential EV owners, including the real-world driving range, the need to adapt driving styles to features like regenerative braking, and ensuring that safety ratings meet individual requirements. Financing remains a critical aspect, with green loans and other financial products playing a role in making EV ownership more accessible. The RACV further cautions that the surge in demand has led to extended delivery times and supply chain bottlenecks, which may intensify if fuel prices stay high.
The growing interest in EVs is also driving more consumers to explore the second-hand market, where additional factors such as battery health, warranty coverage, and ongoing software support become paramount. As the Australian EV market continues to expand, the RACV’s guidance underscores the importance of informed decision-making to ensure that new owners select vehicles that align with their practical needs and long-term expectations. This trend signals a significant shift in consumer behaviour, with implications for manufacturers, dealers, and policymakers aiming to support the transition to electric mobility.
