BYD Has Another Tough Month of Sales Decline
Summary By: eMotoX
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD experienced a notable decline in sales during April 2026, continuing a challenging trend from previous months. Overall passenger vehicle deliveries fell by 15.7% compared to the same month last year, dropping from 372,615 units in April 2025 to 314,100 units in April 2026. Despite this annual decrease, BYD did see a modest month-on-month recovery, with sales rising 6.2% from March to April 2026.
The decline was particularly pronounced in BYD’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment, which saw a 19.8% year-on-year drop, falling from 195,740 to 156,944 units. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales also decreased by 11.1% year on year, although both segments recorded slight improvements compared to the previous month. These figures underline the difficulties BYD faces in maintaining growth within its core passenger electric vehicle market amid increasing competition and market fluctuations.
In the commercial vehicle sector, BYD’s electric bus sales bucked the overall downward trend with an 11.7% increase year on year, rising from 394 to 440 units. However, this segment experienced a sharp 33.6% decline compared to the previous month, indicating volatility in demand. Meanwhile, non-bus commercial vehicle sales fell 7% year on year but surged 70.3% month on month, suggesting some recovery in this area despite ongoing challenges.
The sustained sales downturn presents a significant hurdle for BYD as it aims to reverse its fortunes in 2026. Without substantial growth in the coming months, the company risks ending the year with a net decline in sales, which could impact its competitive position in the increasingly crowded electric vehicle market. Observers will be watching closely to see how BYD adjusts its strategy to address these headwinds and regain momentum.
