Back-to-back glory for Gómez Villafañe; Pöstlberger holds off chasers to win The Traka 200
Summary By: eMotoX
Lukas Pöstlberger and Sofía Gómez Villafañe emerged victorious at The Traka 200 gravel race held in Girona, Spain, delivering standout performances in a highly competitive field. Pöstlberger, the Austrian Gravel Champion and former Giro d’Italia pink jersey wearer, secured a thrilling win after fending off a late chase group in a solo finish. Meanwhile, Gómez Villafañe successfully defended her title with a commanding ride, finishing over a minute ahead of her nearest rival and cementing her status as one of the sport’s dominant figures.
The Traka 200 featured a challenging 202-kilometre course with more than 2,650 metres of elevation gain, testing riders’ endurance, technical skills, and tactical acumen. Early in the men’s race, Pöstlberger made a decisive move with over 130km remaining, eventually breaking away solo with 20km to go. Despite a determined pursuit from a group including notable riders like Nino Schurter and USA Gravel Champion Bradyn Lange, Pöstlberger maintained his lead to cross the line in just over six hours, 20 seconds clear of Lange.
In the women’s race, Gómez Villafañe set the tone from the start, breaking away with Larissa Hartog before asserting her dominance on the race’s toughest climb, Els Metges. After briefly regrouping with Hartog on the descent, Gómez Villafañe launched a decisive attack in the closing stages to finish solo, more than a minute ahead of Hartog and nearly eight minutes ahead of third-placed Nele Laing. Her victory marked a rare back-to-back win at The Traka 200, underscoring her consistent excellence in gravel racing.
Both races attracted a star-studded line-up, including former WorldTour professionals and mountain biking legends, highlighting The Traka 200’s reputation as Europe’s premier gravel event and a key fixture in the Gravel Earth Series. Pöstlberger reflected on the significance of his win, emphasising the hard work and planning required to triumph in such a prestigious race. The Gravel Earth Series will continue in early June at Ranxo Gravel in Ponts, Spain, promising more high-level gravel competition in the months ahead.
