Front suspension, commodious cargo-carrying capacity, and huge tyre clearance headline Factor’s Sarana gravel bike
Summary By: eMotoX
Factor has expanded its gravel bike range with the introduction of the Sarana, a model specifically engineered for ultra-endurance and long-distance technical riding. Unlike its siblings—the Ostra Gravel, designed for racing, and the versatile Aluto—the Sarana focuses on carrying capacity and rider comfort over extended periods in challenging, often remote terrain. The bike was developed through a close collaboration with endurance athlete Rob Britton, whose experience in ultra-distance events informed many aspects of the design, ensuring it performs well even after many hours in the saddle.
The development process for the Sarana was rigorous and spanned nearly three years, including extensive testing in British Columbia. Factor’s engineering team prioritised features such as increased tyre clearance, frame shape optimisation, and vibration reduction to enhance rider efficiency and comfort during long rides. The frame accommodates tyres up to 57mm wide and incorporates a leaf-spring system in the rear triangle, which Factor claims reduces vibration by 18% compared to typical endurance bikes. The design also includes a large, hollowed-out down tube for internal storage and torsional stiffness, balancing utility with performance.
Aesthetically, the Sarana maintains Factor’s characteristic functional design ethos, with subtle aerodynamic touches and a muted but appealing colour palette inspired by natural outdoor hues. The bike is compatible with both rigid and suspension forks up to 30mm travel and supports 160mm to 180mm brake rotors, making it adaptable to varied terrain and rider preferences. It is optimised for one-by drivetrains, particularly SRAM XPLR AXS, but can also accommodate Shimano GRX Di2 groupsets, and comes ready for dropper posts, highlighting its versatility for different riding styles.
Factor’s Chief Engineer Graham Shrive emphasised the iterative nature of the project, noting that the frame was redesigned multiple times to meet the demanding criteria set by Britton and the team. The Sarana will make its competitive debut at the upcoming Traka gravel race in Girona, where Factor’s sponsored riders will put it through its paces on rough terrain. A comprehensive review from eMotoX Sports is forthcoming, following initial hands-on testing of the bike.
The Sarana represents Factor’s commitment to addressing the specific needs of ultra-endurance gravel riders, blending innovation with practical design solutions. Its emphasis on comfort, load management, and durability positions it as a strong contender for athletes tackling multi-day events or challenging bikepacking adventures, potentially influencing future developments in the gravel bike segment.
