New BMC Kaius 01 Attacks from All Angles to Become Next ‘Ultimate Gravel Race Bike’
Summary By: eMotoX
BMC has unveiled the new Kaius 01, positioning it as a serious contender for the title of the ultimate gravel race bike. Building on the strengths of its predecessor, the updated model delivers improvements across multiple key areas including aerodynamics, stiffness, weight, tyre clearance, and cargo capacity. The revised frameset weighs 1,469 grams, offering a 63-gram reduction compared to the previous version, while achieving a 3% increase in stiffness. BMC’s “Aerosynthesis” design philosophy underpins the aerodynamic enhancements, which reportedly yield a 12% improvement in bike-only drag and a 1.05% system-wide speed gain when paired with 45mm tyres.
The Kaius 01 incorporates several technical innovations inspired by BMC’s road racing models, such as the Aero Halo fork and Aerocore downtube, alongside a compliant Arete seat tube and aero-shaped seatpost. The bike supports tyres up to 52mm wide with generous ISO 6mm clearance, yet retains a threaded T47 bottom bracket rather than a pressfit design. Cargo storage has been thoughtfully addressed with an external mounting system, including top tube bag mounts and a strap mount Cargo Plate, prioritising quick access during races over internal frame storage solutions typical of BMC’s URS line.
The geometry has been refined to enhance handling and rider positioning, with a 5mm shorter reach to encourage a more aggressive stance and greater weight distribution over the front wheel. Stack height is increased by 11mm, and ground clearance is improved by 10mm due to larger tyres. The front trail has been extended by 4mm for better traction, and the rear triangle features 5mm longer chainstays to aid rear wheel grip without compromising frame stiffness. The bike will be offered in six sizes and comes equipped with BMC’s second-generation ICS Carbon Aero Cockpit compatible with large cycling computers like the Wahoo ACE.
Three complete models will be available, ranging from the top-tier Kaius 01 One with SRAM Red XPLR AXS groupset priced at £12,999, to the more affordable Kaius 01 Three featuring SRAM Rival XPLR AXS at £6,199. Each model sports a distinctive two-tone paint scheme inspired by iconic gravel race landscapes, adding a unique aesthetic dimension. Early impressions from a ride in the hills of Fort Ord suggest the bike offers a balanced and comfortable fit, with no exaggerated geometry compromises typical of some gravel race bikes. The Kaius 01 appears well-suited to meet the demands of fast, technical gravel racing while maintaining the versatility needed for longer rides.
