Full Circle Lithium sells its battery fire extinguishing agent to US waste management operator

Full Circle Lithium, a US-based company, has achieved its first commercial sale of FCL-X, an innovative fire extinguishing agent specifically developed to tackle lithium-ion battery fires. The product has been purchased by a US waste management operator for deployment at their facilities, marking a significant step in addressing the increasing problem of battery-related fires in waste handling environments. This development comes amid a rising number of incidents involving lithium-ion batteries igniting in landfills, recycling centres, and waste collection systems across North America. Lithium-ion battery fires pose unique challenges due to the phenomenon of thermal runaway, a chemical reaction that generates extreme heat and flammable gases, often causing fires that burn hotter, spread faster, and can reignite long after initial suppression efforts. Traditional firefighting methods, such as water or standard extinguishing agents, frequently prove ineffective against these fires, which also release toxic gases harmful to both personnel and the environment. In 2022 alone, approximately 2,400 fires were reported at waste facilities in the US and Canada, contributing to a global total exceeding 5,000 incidents at recycling sites annually. FCL-X is engineered to rapidly suppress thermal runaway reactions and minimise the risk of reignition, offering enhanced safety for on-site workers and reducing potential damage to facilities. Carlos Vicens, CEO of Full Circle Lithium, emphasised the urgency of the problem and the lack of effective solutions until now, positioning FCL-X as a purpose-built response that is quickly gaining recognition as a new standard in managing lithium-ion battery fires. The sale to a waste management operator underscores growing industry demand for specialised fire safety products tailored to the evolving risks posed by electric vehicle and consumer electronics batteries.
