Ford Customers Are Saving Even More On Home Charging With TXU Energy Free EV Miles Program
Summary By: eMotoX
Ford and TXU Energy have teamed up to offer a new programme that allows Texas-based Ford electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid owners to charge their cars at home during off-peak hours for free. The Free EV Miles initiative credits customers’ TXU Energy bills for electricity used between 10 p.m. and 1 p.m. the following day, encouraging overnight charging when demand on the grid is low. This partnership aims to demonstrate how EV ownership can be both environmentally friendly and cost-effective, with the programme managed through Ford Energy Rewards and supported by ChargeScape, a Ford-backed company facilitating utility partnerships.
One notable participant, Ricky Davis, a Mustang Mach-E owner from Fort Worth, has benefited significantly from the scheme. By shifting his charging to off-peak hours using a 240V plug in his garage, Davis saved nearly £900 in electricity costs last year, reflecting substantial financial advantages for EV drivers who adapt their charging habits. Ford estimates that typical savings under the programme could reach around £650 annually for a Mustang Mach-E, £975 for an F-150 Lightning, and £245 for a Ford Escape, highlighting the potential for widespread consumer benefit.
The Free EV Miles programme has successfully shifted 94% of Ford EV customers’ home charging to off-peak periods in 2025, according to TXU Energy data. Jarrod Maddox, TXU Energy’s director of product development, emphasised that this behavioural change not only delivers savings for customers but also helps balance electricity demand as EV adoption rises. The initiative also supports grid sustainability by aligning charging times with periods of high renewable energy generation, particularly wind power in Texas.
Collectively, participants redirected approximately 515 megawatt-hours of charging to off-peak hours in the programme’s first full year, enough to power 39 average Texas homes for a year. This early success provides valuable insights for utilities seeking scalable incentive models to manage increasing EV charging loads sustainably. TXU Energy customers with eligible Ford EVs can enrol in the programme via the TXU website, marking a significant step towards integrating electric vehicles more efficiently into the energy system.
