BYD next generation Atto 3 unveiled with 5 minute flash charging

Summary By: eMotoX
BYD has revealed the next generation of its popular electric SUV, known in Australia as the Atto 3 and in China as the Yuan Plus or Yan Plus. The new model was unveiled at Auto China 2026 in Beijing and introduces a groundbreaking 5-minute flash charging capability, alongside updated powertrain options and battery configurations. This development marks a significant step forward for BYD, which has already established the Atto 3 as an affordable and well-received electric SUV in the Australian market since its 2022 launch. The updated Yuan Plus offers two variants: a single rear motor producing 200 kW paired with a 57.5 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery, and a more powerful 240 kW dual-motor version with a 68.5 kWh battery pack. The smaller battery is expected to deliver around 450 km of range under the WLTP cycle, while the larger pack could extend this to approximately 630 km. Both models benefit from BYD’s new Flash Charging technology, enabling a rapid charge from 10 to 70 percent in just five minutes, or a near-full charge in about nine minutes, thanks to charging speeds up to 1,500 kW at dedicated Flash Charging stations. BYD’s Flash Charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly across China, with over 5,000 sites operational as of April 2026, covering 292 cities and already exceeding a quarter of the company’s 2026 deployment target of 20,000 stations. This extensive network is critical to supporting the ultra-fast charging capabilities of the new Atto 3, which utilises the safety and durability of BYD’s Blade Battery technology while significantly improving charging speed. The new model itself is larger than its predecessor, measuring 4,665 mm in length and featuring upgraded interior elements such as a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a 50 W wireless phone charger, and a relocated gear shifter on the steering wheel for a cleaner cabin layout. While the new Yuan Plus has been launched in China, its arrival in Australia remains uncertain. Recent regulatory filings suggest that a new Evo variant with rear-wheel drive might reach the Australian market first, potentially offering a different powertrain configuration. Given the Atto 3’s importance to BYD’s global strategy and its established presence in Australia, the new model’s introduction will be closely monitored by enthusiasts and industry observers alike, as it promises to push the boundaries of electric SUV performance and charging convenience in a competitive segment.
