CATL to supply Chinese steelmaker with batteries and charging stations for electric mining trucks and machinery

Summary By: eMotoX
CATL, the Chinese battery manufacturer, has entered into a significant partnership with steel producer Jianlong to supply batteries and integrated charging and swapping solutions for a wide range of electric industrial equipment. This collaboration will encompass Jianlong’s electric mining trucks, heavy trucks, ships, and construction machinery across its industrial parks, steel plants, and mining operations. The agreement marks a major step towards the electrification of heavy industry within China, targeting a substantial reduction in carbon emissions from traditionally fossil fuel-dependent sectors. The joint initiative plans to deploy over 3,000 electric heavy trucks within the next five years, supported by the construction of extensive battery swapping infrastructure. This includes at least 16 logistics hub routes and the establishment of 100 battery swapping stations, which will facilitate rapid battery replacement and minimise downtime for heavy machinery. The integrated approach aims to enhance operational efficiency while promoting the adoption of electric vehicles in demanding industrial environments. Beyond vehicle electrification, CATL and Jianlong intend to implement renewable energy projects within Jianlong’s industrial parks, incorporating both centralised and distributed wind and solar power systems. These pilot projects will serve as testbeds for the broader electrification of energy-intensive industries, encompassing sectors such as mining, transportation, energy production, and materials processing. The collaboration highlights a growing trend in China towards combining clean energy generation with electric mobility solutions to drive industrial decarbonisation. This partnership between CATL and Jianlong signals a strategic move to accelerate the transition to sustainable industrial operations in China. By integrating battery technology, renewable energy, and infrastructure development, the companies are positioning themselves at the forefront of the evolving electric heavy machinery market. The success of this initiative could set a precedent for similar projects worldwide, demonstrating the viability of large-scale electrification in traditionally polluting industries.
