Remco Evenepoel escapes rivals in huge early break at Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Summary By: eMotoX
Remco Evenepoel launched a significant early breakaway at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, joining a near 50-rider group that has forced rival teams to take up the chase. The Belgian rider managed to position himself in the front group following an early split in the peloton, alongside notable contenders such as Egan Bernal and Magnus Cort. With 135 kilometres remaining, the breakaway holds a lead of around two minutes and 40 seconds, compelling teams like UAE Emirates-XRG and Decathlon CMA CGM to organise the pursuit.
The composition of the breakaway is particularly strong, featuring riders from nearly every team except the two leading the chase. Evenepoel benefits from the support of his Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe teammate Nico Denz, while Soudal Quick-Step has three riders in the group, including Pascal Eenkoorn, Dylan Van Baarle, and Louis Vervaeke. Meanwhile, key favourites such as Tadej Pogačar and Paul Seixas remain in the main peloton, with British hopeful Tom Pidcock also present among the chasers.
Evenepoel arrives at Liège-Bastogne-Liège in excellent form, having recently won the Amstel Gold Race, and is aiming to reclaim the title he last secured in 2023. His main rival, Pogačar, is contesting only his fifth race day of the season but has already claimed victories in prestigious events like Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Paul Seixas has emerged as a rising contender, boasting wins at La Flèche Wallonne and the Itzulia Basque Country earlier this year.
The race still has a long way to go before the decisive climbs, with the Côte de la Redoute, Côte de Forges, and Côte de la Roche aux Faucons looming in the final 40 kilometres. These steep ascents, particularly the punishing gradients of the Redoute and Roche aux Faucons, traditionally play a crucial role in shaping the outcome of Liège-Bastogne-Liège. As the race progresses, the early breakaway’s advantage will be tested on these iconic climbs, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion.
