Hero strengthens its team with Michael Docherty

Michael Docherty, the South African rally-raid rider renowned for holding the Rally2 category record with 37 stage wins, has officially joined Hero MotoSports. This marks a significant milestone in Docherty’s career as he steps up to become a factory rider, a long-held ambition realised after competing in rally-raid events since 2021. He will debut for Hero at the upcoming Desafío Ruta 40 YPF in Argentina, the third round of the 2026 World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), with a shared goal of progressing towards the 2027 Dakar Rally. Docherty’s journey to this point has been marked by consistent success in the Rally2 class, where he has distinguished himself by winning stages ahead of top-tier RallyGP competitors. Born in Johannesburg in 1994, he transitioned from motocross, where he represented South Africa internationally, to rally-raid racing in 2021, immediately making an impact by winning the Rally2 category at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. His performances, including a third-place finish in the 2025 Rally2 World Cup, have positioned him among the elite in his class and attracted the attention of Hero MotoSports. The partnership with Hero MotoSports represents a strategic move for both parties. Hero, having secured the RallyGP World Championship with Ross Branch in 2024, is expanding its presence in the Rally2 category and sees Docherty as a key asset in its ambitions.
