Spotted at Sea Otter: New MTB Helmets from Bell and a Sub $100 Model from Smith

At the recent Sea Otter festival, a limited selection of new mountain bike helmets made their debut, with notable releases from Smith and Bell. Smith introduced the Pilot MTB, a budget-friendly half-shell helmet priced at $95, designed to offer enhanced coverage and modern styling reminiscent of their higher-end models. Alongside this, Smith unveiled the Sidekick Jr. Mips, a kids’ helmet that brings adult-level protective features and updated aesthetics to younger riders, also retailing for under $100. The Smith Pilot MTB helmet marks a significant upgrade from its predecessor, the Convoy, featuring increased coverage around the temples and occipital lobe to meet contemporary safety standards. It incorporates a MIPS Evolve Core liner for rotational impact protection, a performance comfort liner, and an adjustable fit system for personalised comfort. The helmet also includes practical additions such as eyewear storage channels and 13 vents for airflow, available in five sizes and multiple matte colour options. Smith’s Sidekick Jr. Mips helmet mirrors the design and safety elements of adult helmets, including an in-mould EPS and polycarbonate shell, MIPS rotational protection, and an adjustable fit system. It offers extended rear coverage and comes with a non-adjustable visor, plus compatibility with a rechargeable rear light. The model is available in two youth sizes and a variety of vibrant colours, providing a stylish and secure option for young riders aged between four and twelve. Bell made a notable return to the MTB helmet scene with two new models: the Full Air Mips and the 3QTR Air Mips. The Full Air Mips is a lightweight full-face helmet certified for downhill, BMX, and e-bike use, weighing just 730 grams in a medium size. It aims to combine the protection of a full-face helmet with the ventilation and comfort of a half-shell, featuring removable temple and cheek pads, a MIPS Evolve liner, and innovative sweat management technology. The helmet also includes a quick-release camera mount and a magnetic Fidlock buckle for convenience. The 3QTR Air Mips offers similar features to the Full Air but without the chin bar, providing three-quarter coverage for riders seeking a balance between protection and ventilation. Both Bell helmets come in multiple sizes and colour options, signalling the brand’s renewed focus on innovative and versatile MTB head protection. These new releases highlight a trend towards combining safety, comfort, and style across a range of price points and rider needs.
