UK government says it will cut red tape for on-street EV charger installations

The UK government has announced a series of measures aimed at accelerating the nation’s transition to clean energy, with a particular focus on easing the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers on streets. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband outlined plans to streamline outdated regulations, facilitating quicker grid upgrades and enabling more widespread deployment of renewable technologies such as solar panels and heat pumps. A key highlight is the commitment to legislate permitted development rights this summer, which will allow for cross-pavement charging solutions and make it easier for drivers without private driveways to access home EV charging. This move addresses a significant barrier faced by many urban EV users, particularly renters and flat-dwellers, who often struggle to install charging points due to restrictive planning rules. The government also plans to consult on changes to building regulations to increase EV charging provision in new builds and major renovations, further supporting equitable access to charging infrastructure. These reforms aim to ensure that the shift to electric vehicles is inclusive, removing obstacles that have previously limited EV ownership in densely populated areas. Industry leaders specialising in on-street charging have welcomed the announcement. John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, which develops lamppost charging solutions, praised the government’s commitment as a step towards ensuring no driver is left behind in the transition to electric mobility. Similarly, Michael Goulden, CEO of Kerbo Charge, highlighted the importance of permitted development rights in enabling practical and affordable charging options for city residents, emphasising how the new rules could unlock EV ownership for millions currently excluded due to lack of driveway access. The announcement comes amid a surge in EV uptake in the UK, with March 2026 marking a record month for electric vehicle registrations. Battery electric vehicles accounted for nearly 23% of all new car sales, reflecting a significant year-on-year increase. The government’s new measures are expected to support this growing market by removing infrastructure bottlenecks and expanding the accessibility of charging points, thereby encouraging further adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
