BYD Wins In A Slow Return To Normal — China March EV Sales Report

Summary By: eMotoX
China’s electric vehicle (EV) market showed signs of stabilising in March 2026 after a turbulent start to the year marked by a sales slump following the end of purchase tax exemptions for new energy vehicles (NEVs). Overall vehicle sales in China fell 15% year-on-year to approximately 1.6 million units, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) experiencing a slightly smaller decline of 12%, reaching 568,000 sales. Despite the downturn, plug-in vehicles maintained a strong presence, accounting for 52% of the market share, with BEVs alone representing 35%, slightly surpassing their share from the same month in 2025. This gradual recovery is also reflected in the top-selling models, where internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles have become less dominant, signalling a return to the pre-incentive market dynamics. BYD made a notable comeback in March, placing three models in the top ten best sellers after having none in February, underscoring its resilience amid intensifying competition. Li Auto’s midsize i6 emerged as the best-selling new model, continuing the company’s resurgence after a period of declining sales. The i6 stands out for its combination of luxury, spaciousness, and advanced features such as air suspension and lidar-assisted autonomous driving, all offered at a competitive price point. Meanwhile, Geely’s Geome Xingyuan hatchback secured second place, solidifying its position as a strong contender in the compact segment and edging out rivals like BYD’s Dolphin. The market’s segmentation reveals that plug-in vehicles dominate most categories except for the compact C segment, where ICE models still hold a majority, highlighting the challenges of electrifying this particular segment. The full-size category saw the NIO ES8 outperform competitors including Xiaomi’s YU7 and Fang Cheng Bao Tai 7, with the Mercedes E-Class ICE model surprisingly taking second place. Tesla’s Model Y, despite a 17% year-on-year drop in deliveries, retained its top spot, helped by the popularity of its extended wheelbase “L” version, which continues to appeal to Chinese consumers. Looking ahead, the evolving competitive landscape suggests that while BYD’s new Sealion 06 crossover shows promise with its value-for-money proposition and 800V electrical architecture, it may struggle to replicate the sustained dominance of its predecessor, the BYD Song. The increasing sophistication and diversity of offerings from startups like Li Auto and established players such as Geely indicate a maturing market where innovation and differentiation will be critical. Overall, the March figures point to a cautious but steady return to normality in China’s EV market, with ongoing shifts in consumer preferences and model rankings shaping the sector’s trajectory.
