Specialized Releases Long-Anticipated S-Works Demo 11 w/ HighGear Drive Co-developed with SRAM

Summary By: eMotoX
Specialized has unveiled the highly anticipated S-Works Demo 11, a downhill bike that introduces a revolutionary suspension and drivetrain system developed in collaboration with SRAM. The standout feature is the integration of the HighGear gearbox combined with an Over Bottom Bracket (OBB) linkage, a design that promises to deliver a fully active and independent suspension. This system aims to minimise pedal feedback, improve bump force management, and maintain stability under heavy loads, allowing riders to maintain speed and control across challenging terrain. The new Demo 11 represents a significant evolution from its predecessor, incorporating three years of prototype testing and refinement. At the heart of the Demo 11’s innovation is the HighGear gearbox, which replaces a traditional chainring with an internal mechanism that separates the drivetrain from the suspension movement. This setup includes a compact chainring connected to a jackshaft inside the gearbox, which then drives an external chainring positioned forward and above the bottom bracket. This arrangement keeps chain length constant regardless of suspension travel, reducing interference and increasing ground clearance by 30mm compared to the previous model. The bike is designed exclusively for 27.5-inch rear wheels, reflecting the system’s specific engineering requirements. The OBB linkage further enhances the bike’s performance by allowing independent tuning of the axle path, leverage rate, and braking behaviour. This separation of forces enables the suspension to remain active even under hard braking, improving rider control and energy efficiency on long descents. Specialized has opted for a 24% progressive leverage curve and a rearward-then-forward axle path to ensure smooth suspension action. The self-aligning chassis design, which “pulls” the shock through the chainstays, helps maintain wheel alignment and predictability throughout the travel, contributing to a composed and stable ride. Geometry changes on the Demo 11 reflect a move towards accommodating a broader range of riders, with larger sizing options and adjustable reach and bottom bracket height. The new model starts at size S3 and extends to S5, with reach measurements ranging from 445mm to 500mm, adjustable by ±6mm. Chainstays are size-specific, and bottom bracket height can be altered by 7mm, allowing riders to tailor the bike’s fit and handling characteristics more precisely than before. The S-Works Demo 11 comes in a single high-end build priced at $11,000, with a frame-only option available for $6,500. The complete bike features premium components such as the RockShox Boxxer Ultimate fork, SRAM XX DH AXS drivetrain, and Roval Traverse Gravity wheels, resulting in a claimed weight of 41lbs. While the addition of the HighGear gearbox adds mass, its low placement helps maintain a favourable centre of gravity. With World Cup victories already backing the technology, expectations are high for riders like Loïc Bruni to showcase the Demo 11’s capabilities in the upcoming season.
