World’s largest fully electric container ship begins commercial operations
Summary By: eMotoX
China has launched the world’s largest fully electric container ship, the Ning Yuan Dian Kun, which has commenced commercial operations along a route between Ningbo-Zhoushan and Jiaxing ports in Zhejiang Province. Constructed by Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipbuilding, the vessel is a 10,000-tonne-class ship measuring nearly 128 metres in length and capable of carrying 742 standard 20-foot containers. It is powered by ten containerised batteries with a combined capacity of 19 megawatt-hours, driving two 875-kilowatt permanent-magnet synchronous motors, marking a significant step in maritime electrification.
Designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute, the Ning Yuan Dian Kun features a dual-mode charging system that utilises both high-voltage shore power and rapid battery swapping, enhancing operational efficiency. The ship’s design also incorporates aerodynamic improvements, including a specialised bow that reduces air resistance by up to 20 per cent. These innovations contribute to an estimated annual reduction of 1,462 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, underscoring the vessel’s environmental credentials.
Beyond its electric propulsion, the container ship is equipped with advanced intelligent systems that enable autonomous collision avoidance, high-precision tracking, and integrated control between ship, shore, and cloud platforms. The vessel supports real-time panoramic monitoring and autonomous route planning, with the flexibility to switch between manual and intelligent navigation modes. These features position the Ning Yuan Dian Kun at the forefront of smart shipping technology.
A sister ship, the Ning Yuan Dian Peng, is expected to begin sea trials in May, with delivery anticipated in June. Both vessels will be operated by Ningbo Ocean Shipping, which currently manages a fleet where 57 per cent of ships are classified as energy efficient or “green.” Chen Xiaofeng, chairman of Ningbo Ocean Shipping, highlighted the project as a demonstration of the company’s commitment to the green transformation of the shipping industry and alignment with China’s carbon reduction goals.
