Utility Engie to install 3,000 public EV charging points in Belgium
Summary By: eMotoX
French utility giant Engie has secured a significant public contract to install nearly 3,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points across Wallonia, the southern region of Belgium. The agreement involves the deployment of 2,926 AC chargers, each with a 22 kW capacity, spread over 242 municipalities. Installation is set to occur over the next two years, with Engie’s subsidiary Engie Vianeo responsible for operating and maintaining the network for a decade.
This latest contract builds on Engie’s expanding footprint in Belgium’s EV infrastructure market. Earlier this year, the company signed a similar deal to install 1,640 charging points in the Brussels-Capital Region. Currently, Engie manages nearly 7,000 chargers across Belgium, primarily in Flanders and Brussels, positioning itself as a key player in the country’s transition to electric mobility.
Engie’s ambitions extend beyond these contracts, with plans to deploy a total of 12,000 charging points nationwide by 2028. The company’s extensive experience in the energy sector, operating in 27 European countries and 48 globally, underpins its capability to support Belgium’s growing demand for accessible and reliable EV charging infrastructure.
The expansion of public charging networks in Belgium reflects broader trends across Europe as governments and utilities push to accelerate EV adoption. Engie’s role in this transformation highlights the increasing collaboration between public authorities and private operators to build the necessary infrastructure for a sustainable transport future. With a decade-long operational commitment, Engie is set to play a pivotal role in shaping Belgium’s EV landscape in the coming years.
