Royal Enfield Launches The Flying Flea, Its First Electric Motorcycle
Summary By: eMotoX
Royal Enfield has unveiled the Flying Flea C6, marking its first-ever electric motorcycle and signalling a major shift away from its century-long tradition of internal combustion engines. The launch in Bengaluru introduces a new electric sub-brand that blends the company’s heritage with cutting-edge lightweight engineering and connectivity features. This move reflects Royal Enfield’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility and positions the brand at the forefront of India’s emerging premium electric two-wheeler market.
The Flying Flea C6 is built on a proprietary L-platform designed to optimise weight and thermal management, resulting in a kerb weight of just 124 kilograms—making it the lightest bike in Royal Enfield’s current lineup. Its forged aluminium frame and distinctive girder fork draw inspiration from 1930s aviation design, combining vintage aesthetics with modern functionality. Powered by a 15.4 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor, the bike can accelerate from 0 to 60 km/h in 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 115 km/h. The 3.91 kWh lithium-ion battery, encased in a finned magnesium alloy that acts as a heatsink, offers an official range of 154 km under the Indian Driving Cycle, with real-world urban range expected to be around 100 km.
Royal Enfield’s leadership emphasised the significance of this electric transition during the launch. Siddhartha Lal, Executive Chairman of Eicher Motors, described the move as a pivotal new chapter that honours the brand’s legacy of authenticity while embracing future possibilities. CEO B. Govindarajan highlighted the in-house development effort behind the Flying Flea, underscoring the integration of hardware and software expertise to create a motorcycle that is both intuitive and engaging. He also revealed plans for a broader electric portfolio, including a forthcoming scrambler-styled model, the S6.
To accelerate adoption, Royal Enfield has introduced a phased rollout starting with a flagship store in Bengaluru and a Battery-as-a-Service scheme. This model lowers the initial purchase price to 1.99 lakh rupees by offering the battery via subscription or lease, with full ownership priced at 2.79 lakh rupees. The Flying Flea is equipped with an advanced electronics suite called Fleaware.OS, featuring over-the-air updates, lean-angle sensitive traction control, cornering ABS, and multiple ride modes. Additional tech amenities include a 3.5-inch circular TFT touchscreen and wireless phone charging integrated into the fuel tank area, catering to the needs of urban commuters.
The Flying Flea C6 serves as a technological showcase for Royal Enfield’s ambitions in the electric motorcycle segment, signalling a strategic pivot towards premium electric mobility in India and beyond. With its blend of heritage-inspired design, modern engineering, and smart connectivity, the model lays the groundwork for the company’s future electric offerings and its goal to lead the evolving two-wheeler market.
