XPENG GX Exemplifies the Large, Premium SUVs Launching Ahead of Auto China 2026
Summary By: eMotoX
XPENG has unveiled its new GX, a large and premium electrified SUV that exemplifies the trend of luxury electric vehicles launching ahead of Auto China 2026. The GX is a substantial vehicle, measuring over 5.2 metres in length and riding on 22-inch wheels, positioning it between a Range Rover and a Chevy Tahoe in size. Despite its imposing, squared-off design, the GX boasts impressive aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of just 0.255, outperforming many well-known electric vehicles. The interior promises spaciousness and advanced comfort features, including highly adjustable seats with massage functions and powered amenities throughout.
The GX is available in both extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) variants. The EREV model combines a 63 kWh battery with a generator engine, offering a total range of nearly 1,600 km, while the BEV version features a larger 110 kWh battery and a range of 750 km under the CLTC standard. Both models employ dual motors on the front and rear axles, delivering robust power outputs and built-in redundancy to ensure continued operation if one motor fails. XPENG has incorporated aerospace-inspired safety and reliability features, including multiple layers of system redundancy in steering, braking, and power supply, alongside rigorous crash testing that exceeds standard requirements.
XPENG’s GX also introduces a Level 4-capable advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), powered by a sophisticated 3+1 Turing processor setup delivering 3,000 TOPS of computing performance. This system reflects the company’s emphasis on aviation-grade safety standards, aiming to provide a highly reliable autonomous driving experience. The GX will be offered initially in a flagship trim priced at around 400,000 RMB (£47,000), with seating configurations likely to include six or seven seats, catering to premium family and executive transport markets. Additionally, XPENG plans to deploy the GX as a robotaxi, potentially elevating ride-hailing services with a first-class vehicle experience.
The GX launch is part of a broader wave of large, electrified premium SUVs emerging in the Chinese market, where automakers are pushing the boundaries of technology, range, and luxury. Other notable models include offerings from Denza, BYD, Nio, and Wey, all competing in a segment that is rapidly evolving with advanced ADAS, extended electric ranges, and fast charging capabilities. This surge in premium electric SUVs contrasts with the relative quiet in the US market and highlights China’s leadership in electric vehicle innovation. The growing popularity of SUVs may also shift traditional preferences for luxury MPVs in China, potentially influencing future vehicle partnerships and expanding the appeal of electric SUVs globally.
