“Fraud, He Wrote!” Whistleblower Takes On Donut Lab Battery Claims

Finnish battery startup Donut Lab has come under scrutiny following allegations that it exaggerated the capabilities of its solid-state battery technology, which it claims is powering a production electric motorcycle. A criminal complaint filed by Lauri Peltola, chief commercial officer at fellow Finnish battery developer Nordic Nano, challenges the veracity of Donut Lab’s assertions regarding the battery’s energy density, lifespan, and readiness for mass production. The complaint also raises doubts about the company’s manufacturing infrastructure and points to discrepancies between public statements and internal development progress. Reports indicate that Donut Lab has been promoting a battery model originally developed by CT-Coating, a partner company, despite having shifted focus to a newer design still in early development. Internal communications obtained by Helsingen Sanomat suggest that the showcased technology may be outdated and not representative of the company’s current capabilities. This has cast further doubt on Donut Lab’s January claim that its solid-state battery was close to commercial deployment, prompting questions about transparency and the authenticity of its demonstrations. Both Donut Lab and Nordic Nano have responded by denying any wrongdoing or misleading conduct. Donut Lab’s CEO Marko Lehtimäki stated he was unaware of the complaint, while Nordic Nano’s CEO Esa Parjanen rejected Peltola’s accusations and emphasised that Peltola is not involved with Nordic Nano’s battery project. Despite the tensions, the two companies maintain a strategic partnership, with Lehtimäki also serving on Nordic Nano’s board and highlighting their shared commitment to advancing sustainable energy technologies. The controversy surrounding Donut Lab’s claims could have wider implications for investor confidence and the evaluation of emerging battery technologies within the electric mobility sector.
