Elli Mobility Provides Charging Services for the Vatican’s Electric Fleet
Summary By: eMotoX
The Vatican has partnered with Elli Mobility, Volkswagen Group’s energy and charging subsidiary, to support the management and operation of its expanding electric vehicle fleet. By adopting Elli’s charging card and digital fleet management platform, the Vatican will facilitate seamless access to over one million public charging points across Europe, enabling efficient charging for its service vehicles during official travel beyond Vatican territory. This collaboration forms part of the Vatican’s broader sustainability strategy aimed at achieving climate-neutral mobility for its fleet by 2030.
The Vatican’s transition to electric vehicles has accelerated in recent years, with nearly 40 fully electric Volkswagen ID. models delivered in 2024, followed by additional electric utility vehicles in 2025. Elli’s platform will allow the Vatican to centrally oversee charging processes, energy consumption, and billing through a single digital interface. This system provides transparent tariffs for various charging types, helping the Vatican maintain clear cost control and operational efficiency as it integrates electric vehicles into its fleet.
Giovanni Palazzo, CEO of Elli, emphasises that the true challenge of fleet electrification lies beyond vehicle acquisition, focusing on the reliable day-to-day management of charging and energy use. Elli Mobility’s platform supports organisations in navigating the complexities of fleet electrification, offering tools to monitor charging sessions, assign cards digitally, and export data for accounting and reporting. This approach aligns with a wider European trend where corporate fleets constitute a significant portion of new vehicle registrations and are pivotal in reducing operational carbon emissions.
The partnership also highlights the ongoing need for digital solutions in fleet management, as many companies still rely on basic tools or lack dedicated digital systems altogether. Elli Mobility currently serves over 20,000 companies across Europe, positioning itself as a key enabler of the electric mobility transition by helping organisations manage mixed fleets and optimise energy use. The Vatican’s adoption of Elli’s services exemplifies how institutions can leverage technology to advance sustainable mobility goals while ensuring operational transparency and cost-effectiveness.
