IONNA and Circle K plan 350 US EV charging sites with 400 kW fast chargers
Summary By: eMotoX
IONNA and Circle K have announced a significant collaboration to expand high-power electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the United States. The partnership aims to develop over 350 charging sites under the “Rechargeries @ Circle K” brand, incorporating both upgrades to existing locations and the installation of new fast chargers at high-traffic Circle K convenience stores. Each site is planned to offer charging speeds of up to 400 kW, supporting both CCS and NACS connectors, with the first locations expected to open by the end of 2026 and further expansion continuing into 2027.
This initiative involves IONNA taking over Circle K’s current US charging portfolio, upgrading approximately 85 existing sites, and accelerating the rollout of new stations where chargers are not yet present. The dual approach of retrofitting and new builds is designed to expedite the network’s growth, leveraging Circle K’s widespread retail footprint to provide convenient access to EV drivers. The partnership aligns with IONNA’s broader ambition to establish 30,000 high-power charging bays by 2030, supported by backing from eight major automakers including BMW, General Motors, and Toyota.
Executives from both companies highlighted the strategic benefits of the collaboration. Aaron Wolff, IONNA’s COO, expressed pride in being chosen by Circle K and emphasised the value of Circle K’s extensive and well-located sites for expanding fast charging infrastructure. Meanwhile, Håkon Stiksrud, Circle K’s VP of Global eMobility, underscored the goal of combining reliable, high-speed charging with the convenience of Circle K’s retail services, aiming to make EV charging as seamless and accessible as possible for drivers.
The partnership not only enhances the availability of ultra-fast charging but also integrates it within familiar retail environments where drivers can access amenities such as food, beverages, and restrooms during charging stops. This approach recognises the importance of convenience-store locations in supporting the growing EV market by facilitating quick and comfortable charging breaks. As the network develops, it is expected to play a key role in accelerating EV adoption by addressing range anxiety and improving the overall charging experience across the US.
