Two weeks after training crash, young Spanish professional remains in intensive care

Jaume Guardeño, a promising young Spanish professional cyclist, remains in a critical but stable condition in intensive care two weeks after a serious training accident. The 23-year-old rider crashed on 31 March while descending near his hometown of Caldes de Montbui, north of Barcelona. He reportedly struck a rock on the road, lost control of his bike, and collided with a car. Since turning professional in 2024, Guardeño has been regarded as one of the team’s brightest young talents, having achieved notable results such as 14th overall in the 2023 Vuelta a España and third in the Best Young Rider classification at the Volta a Catalunya earlier this year. Fellow Caja Rural rider and Spanish National Time Trial Champion Abel Balderstone reflected on the dangers inherent in professional cycling, particularly during training on open roads. Speaking after a recent race, Balderstone acknowledged the risks all riders face and expressed sympathy for Guardeño and his family. He also noted the impact of the accident on Guardeño’s future ambitions, including the possibility of competing together at the 2026 Tour de France, for which their team holds a wildcard invitation.
