Busting more myths about EV pole charging and electricity networks
Summary By: eMotoX
Dan Bye, Head of Customer Connections and Requests at CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy, has addressed several misconceptions surrounding the rollout of pole-mounted electric vehicle (EV) chargers in Melbourne. Responding to recent criticism, Bye clarified that the EV charger at Collingwood, previously reported as inactive, has been operational for months and is only awaiting commissioning by a third party. He also confirmed that a nearby community battery was connected promptly, countering claims of delays attributed to the battery developer rather than the network operator.
Bye emphasised the distinction between the new 22kW AC pole-mounted chargers being trialled and existing DC kerbside chargers, highlighting that while DC chargers are more common, the number of AC pole-mounted chargers in Victoria remains limited but is expanding. He stressed that the trial aims to gather data on charging behaviour, network impacts, and optimal site selection rather than competing with private sector providers. The chargers are operated by third-party e-mobility service companies, with CitiPower’s role focused on infrastructure connection and support.
Addressing broader concerns raised during the Victorian Parliament’s Inquiry into Electricity Supply for Electric Vehicles, Bye refuted claims about connection delays, data transparency, and access fees. He noted that the network publishes the same data as other Australian distribution businesses and does not refuse connection requests outright, instead offering solutions such as site upgrades or alternative locations. He also explained that applicants bear the costs of network upgrades to avoid burdening other customers, and that pole access rates are aligned with standard fees across Australia, with some discounts granted to new market entrants.
Bye highlighted the network’s commitment to facilitating bi-directional chargers and simplifying the connection process, comparing it favourably to rooftop solar installations. Since mid-2025, detailed guidance has been provided to thousands of electrical contractors to streamline connections. The trial has received positive feedback from local councils, communities, and EV drivers, reinforcing CitiPower’s role in enabling access to reliable charging infrastructure while supporting the transition to electric mobility.
