Mercedes-Benz lays claim to longest range EV with upgraded EQS and vehicle to grid

Summary By: eMotoX
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled an upgraded version of its all-electric luxury saloon, the EQS, now boasting a WLTP-certified driving range of 925 kilometres. This significant enhancement positions the EQS as the electric vehicle with the longest range currently available, surpassing competitors such as the BMW i3. The new model features a larger 122 kWh battery pack, improved with silicon oxide-blended graphite anodes, which increases energy density without expanding the battery’s physical size. In addition to its extended range, the EQS incorporates advanced charging capabilities, including an 800V system that supports ultra-fast charging at up to 350 kW, enabling a 320 km range boost in just ten minutes. The vehicle also supports vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home functions, allowing the battery to act as a power source beyond driving needs. Efficiency is further enhanced by regenerative braking that can recover energy at rates up to 385 kW, while the car introduces steer-by-wire technology, eliminating the traditional steering column in favour of a digital system with redundant safety measures. The new EQS integrates Mercedes-Benz’s latest Operating System (MB.OS), which uses artificial intelligence to manage vehicle functions and connects to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. Its MBUX Hyperscreen spans over 55 inches, merging three displays into a seamless interface, while driver assistance relies on an array of 27 sensors and benefits from over-the-air software updates. These technological advancements underscore Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation in the luxury EV segment. Set to launch in Europe later this year, the EQS will reach Australian markets by the final quarter, although it remains to be seen if the claimed 925 km range will be achievable under local driving conditions. Pricing in Germany starts at €94,403 including VAT, with a reduced rate for business customers. With these upgrades, Mercedes-Benz aims to strengthen its position in the competitive electric vehicle market, offering a blend of luxury, cutting-edge technology, and practical range for long-distance travel.
