Dukosi chip-on-cell monitoring system enables Nordic Marine Power’s PowerStack to achieve DNV type approval

Nordic Marine Power (NMP) has secured DNV type approval for its PowerStack battery system, thanks to the integration of Dukosi’s innovative cell monitoring technology. The Dukosi Cell Monitoring System (DKCMS) embeds a sensor chip directly onto each individual battery cell, enabling simultaneous measurement of temperature and voltage with precise, deterministic latency. This approach contrasts with traditional systems that rely on a limited number of temperature sensors per module, providing a significant safety advantage by detecting overtemperature events earlier and alerting the battery management system (BMS) even during low-power states.
The DKCMS uses Dukosi’s proprietary C-SynQ contactless communication protocol to transmit data between the cell monitors and the BMS, streamlining integration and enhancing system reliability. Achieving DNV type approval is a crucial milestone for NMP, as it confirms that the PowerStack battery system meets stringent maritime safety, environmental, and operational standards. Marine battery systems must adhere to higher safety requirements than those used in electric vehicles or stationary applications, due to the confined spaces, fire suppression challenges, and remote conditions encountered on vessels.
Jonas Roald Nordstrand, CEO of Nordic Marine Power, highlighted the benefits of Dukosi’s chip-on-cell architecture, emphasising its role in providing detailed real-time insights into each cell’s performance. This granular monitoring capability has accelerated the certification process and allowed NMP to optimise production timelines with greater confidence. Meanwhile, Joseph Notaro, chief revenue officer at Dukosi, underscored the critical importance of battery safety, quality, and reliability in marine environments, expressing pride in the successful type approval of the PowerStack system.
The collaboration between NMP and Dukosi represents a significant advancement in maritime battery technology, potentially setting a new benchmark for safety and performance. With DNV certification, the PowerStack system is now authorised for installation across all vessels classed by DNV, opening opportunities for broader adoption in the marine sector. This development may encourage other manufacturers to adopt similar cell-level monitoring solutions, enhancing the overall safety standards of marine battery systems in the future.
