Panaracer’s New GravelKing ZX is a Semi-Slick Gravel Tire Blending Speed & Grip: First Rides

Panaracer has introduced the GravelKing ZX, a new semi-slick gravel tyre designed to blend speed with grip for mixed-terrain riding. The tyre aims to deliver low rolling resistance on straights, akin to a road slick, while maintaining confident handling through loose corners thanks to a carefully engineered tread pattern. This development responds to the varied nature of modern gravel riding, where riders often encounter a mix of quiet gravel roads, hardpack dirt, and tarmac, making fully knobbly tyres less efficient and more taxing over long distances. The GravelKing ZX builds on the success of Panaracer’s GravelKing X1, offering a faster-rolling tread without compromising cornering performance. It features a distinctive three-zone tread design, with a slick centre, a transitional zone with small relief arrows, and rows of progressively taller shoulder knobs. This smooth transition between zones creates a curved profile that enhances grip and stability when leaning into corners, a notable improvement over many semi-slick tyres that can feel abrupt or unpredictable on varying surfaces. Initial rides suggest the GravelKing ZX is a versatile option for riders who want a single tyre that performs well across different conditions without the need to switch between road and gravel-specific tyres. The raised centre section and matching shoulder knobs contribute to a balanced feel, providing confidence on loose gravel and hardpack alike. Panaracer’s goal with the ZX is to offer a do-it-all tyre that combines the speed of road tyres with the traction needed for gravel racing and everyday groading. The GravelKing ZX is available exclusively in 700c, with widths ranging from 35mm to 55mm and options in all-black or tan sidewalls. It comes in three variants: the standard ZX with bead-to-bead puncture protection, the ZX+ with added dual TuffTex protection, and the lightweight ZX R race version. Pricing starts at approximately £52 for the standard ZX, with the ZX+ and ZX R models costing slightly more. Availability varies by size, with some widths already on sale and others due later in 2024 and 2026, reflecting Panaracer’s phased rollout strategy.
