‘It’s looking to be a proper battle in the first round’ – Tiffany Cromwell will be breathing down defending Life Time champion Sofía Gómez Villafañe's neck at the Sea Otter Classic

Australian Olympian Tiffany Cromwell is set to compete in the opening round of the 2026 Life Time Grand Prix at the Sea Otter Classic Gravel race on 16 April. The event marks a significant return for Cromwell to the Californian venue where she claimed her first international victory in 2008. Now riding for Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto, Cromwell comes into the race in strong form after securing the 2025 AusCycling Gravel National Title, aiming to add another prestigious win to her extensive career that includes stage victories in the Giro d’Italia Femminile and the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The main rival for Cromwell will be Sofía Gómez Villafañe, the defending Life Time Grand Prix champion who is seeking her fourth consecutive title in the series. Villafañe, who missed this year’s Cape Epic, has expressed confidence in the increasing competitiveness of the field, predicting a fierce contest from the outset. The women’s race will feature a diverse and talented lineup with competitors from 11 countries, including seven riders making their Grand Prix debut such as Rosa Klöser and Karolina Migoń, the reigning Unbound Gravel 200 champion. On the men’s side, the race will see the return of Keegan Swenson, who has won the Sea Otter Classic four times consecutively but was sidelined earlier this year due to a broken pelvis sustained in a training accident. Swenson faces strong challenges from New Zealand’s Cameron Jones, the 2025 Unbound Gravel winner and Life Time Grand Prix series champion, and South African Matt Beers, a versatile rider with victories across major gravel and mountain bike events. The race will cover a demanding 90-mile course consisting of three laps of a nearly 30-mile loop through the Ford Ord National Monument, featuring over 8,000 feet of climbing. For the first time, the entire Life Time Sea Otter Classic Gravel race will be live-streamed on YouTube, offering fans unprecedented access to the action. Coverage begins at 9.45am Pacific Time, with the men’s elite race starting at 10am and the women’s race following half an hour later. This live broadcast reflects the growing popularity and professionalisation of gravel racing, bringing the sport to a wider audience and highlighting the high calibre of competition expected at this iconic event.
