New Atherton S.170E on test: an eMTB on Atherton terms

Atherton has introduced the S.170E, a new gravity-focused electric mountain bike that prioritises ride feel over headline specifications. Unlike many competitors who chase power and torque figures, Atherton’s development process begins with how the bike rides, shaping every aspect from geometry to suspension accordingly. The S.170E features a CNC-machined aluminium frame crafted in Wales, paired with 180 mm front and 170 mm rear travel, and the Avinox M2S motor system, delivering up to 1,500 watts and 150 Nm of torque. Weighing in at 24 kg in size 8 and priced at €8,549.05, the bike aims to offer a balanced and uncompromising full-power eMTB experience. The frame construction is a standout element, reflecting Atherton’s commitment to precision and durability. Made from high-strength 7075 aluminium, the frame uses a subtractive manufacturing process where excess material is machined away from solid billets to create strong, lightweight lugs and tubes. This labour-intensive method allows for meticulous control over material distribution and thickness, resulting in a robust chassis tested to EFBE Category 5 standards. The design maintains the brand’s signature raw finish and clean lines, emphasising both performance and aesthetic integrity without resorting to carbon fibre. The Avinox M2S motor system is central to the S.170E’s performance and design philosophy. Its compact size enables Atherton to achieve their desired weight distribution and frame geometry, while the integrated 700 Wh battery, featuring a high energy density of 220 Wh/kg, fits seamlessly into the frame’s contours. Although the battery is fixed and not removable, it supports fast charging options up to 12 A, enhancing usability. Some functional but basic plastic components, such as the chainstay protector and cable routing guides, were noted during testing as areas that could be improved for better durability and ease of maintenance. Atherton’s approach signals a deliberate departure from trends focused purely on technical specifications, instead emphasising a holistic riding experience. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern e-bike technology, the S.170E aims to establish a new benchmark for full-power eMTBs that do not compromise on ride quality or durability.
