Electrovaya collaborates on DOE-funded project to develop next-gen energy storage for critical infrastructure

Electrovaya is set to collaborate on a Department of Energy (DOE)-funded initiative aimed at developing advanced energy storage solutions for critical infrastructure. The project, led by Binghamton University and backed by a $5 million grant through the DOE’s Critical Facility Energy Resilience (CiFER) programme, will focus on creating and demonstrating a 1.2 MWh battery system. This system will be installed at Binghamton University’s Centre for Energy-Smart Electronic Systems (ES2) and integrated within a data centre test environment to evaluate its performance in real-world conditions. The initiative brings together a consortium of partners including LiiON, Eaton, and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, each contributing expertise in battery technology, power systems, and grid integration. Electrovaya will provide its proprietary Infinity Battery Technology, which boasts a strong safety record and long cycle life. The battery system is designed to offer peak shaving, backup power, and load management capabilities, addressing the growing energy demands of data centres and other critical facilities. Dr Raj DasGupta, CEO of Electrovaya, emphasised the significance of the project in advancing energy storage solutions that enhance grid resilience while reducing peak demand pressures. He highlighted the importance of using domestic supply chains to support these developments, reflecting broader strategic goals around energy security and sustainability. Electrovaya’s technology is positioned as a scalable and replicable model, potentially paving the way for wider adoption across various high-demand applications. The deployment of this next-generation battery system represents a crucial step towards ensuring reliable and efficient power for critical infrastructure, particularly as data centres continue to expand their energy consumption. By demonstrating the practical benefits of advanced energy storage in a live environment, the project aims to provide a blueprint for future installations that can improve grid stability and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.
