The 2026 Tour de Romandie promises an intense six-day race through the French-speaking regions of Switzerland, covering 851.9 kilometres with a significant elevation gain of 14,183 metres. The event will begin with a prologue in Villars-sur-Glâne, setting the general classification for the week, followed by five road stages that feature a mix of valley routes, punchy climbs, and challenging mountain ascents. Unlike the previous year, which started and ended with individual time trials, the 2026 edition includes only the opening prologue, allowing the road stages to extend the overall distance by nearly 165 kilometres. Each stage offers a distinct challenge, with multiple classified climbs that cater to climbers and all-rounders alike. The first road stage loops around Martigny and includes a demanding category 1 climb at Ovronnaz, likely to shake up the peloton before a possible sprint finish. Subsequent stages weave through picturesque towns such as Rue, Orbe, Broc, and Charmey, featuring a mix of short, steep ascents and longer climbs like the 21.8-kilometre Col Mollendruz in the Jura Mountains. The penultimate stages are characterised by complex circuits and repeated climbs, testing riders’ endurance and tactical acumen. The race culminates with a demanding final stage from Lucens to Leysin, featuring the only mountaintop finish of the week. This 178.2-kilometre stage includes several uncategorised climbs early on, before tackling a pair of category 3 ascents and finishing with a steep, high-altitude climb overlooking the Rhone Valley and Lake Geneva. This finale is expected to be decisive for the overall classification, favouring strong climbers capable of sustaining high power on steep gradients. The route’s design underscores the Tour de Romandie’s reputation as a climber’s playground, with 17 classified climbs spread across the stages. The organisers have crafted a course that balances technical time-trialling with gruelling mountain terrain, promising an exciting race for both riders and fans. The 2026 edition will not only challenge the riders physically but also strategically, as the varied terrain and multiple circuits offer opportunities for breakaways and tactical manoeuvres throughout the week.
